A Message from Lee Ann Harvey following the Developments in Afghanistan

“I have been horrified watching the news of the Taliban taking control of Afghanistan, after the withdrawal of the US troops.

“Having acted for many Afghan nationals in relation to their asylum claims and Immigration matters for over a decade, my colleagues and I have gained a deep understanding of the security situation in Afghanistan, which many governments, including our own, have not been willing to acknowledge, until now.

“The UK government have now, in the wake of the Taliban take over, announced an Afghanistan Resettlement Scheme.

“This scheme is said to welcome up to 5,000 vulnerable Afghans to the UK, who have been forced to flee the country, in its first year alone, with up to a total of 20,000 in the long-term. Whether this will be enough, remains to be seen, however, as it stands today I find myself not having answers to legal questions posed to me by families here in the UK, who are understandably worried and desperate for advice as to how they can move their family members to safety.

“We have found ourselves unable to provide reassurance or advice, as the scheme is not yet open. Whilst further details are due to be announced as to how this scheme will work, I remain deeply concerned that the later this guidance is published, the more human rights abuses there will be. Time really is of the essence and the UK government, need to act more quickly.”
